Overview of Coalition Activities
The Coalition for Educational Opportunities (CEO) is a multi-agency, community based organization that began in 2001. Concerned individuals and organizations that had encountered far too many school leavers in their work felt the issue was a community issue and required a community response.
The CEO group conducted research into alternative programs and school throughout Canada, and in October 2005 sponsored a visit from researchers with the New School Canada in Surrey BC. The CEO Group also coordinated two large-scale community forums, focus groups, and key informant interviews, in order to determine what “our” community thought would be an appropriate response to this issue. At the end of the extensive community consultation it was evident that the community wanted an alternative school, which would be separate from an exiting school, which would integrate a multi-agency approach, and an alternative curriculum.
In June 2006, a proposal titled “All Youth Learn, All Youth Succeed” was submitted to the Department of Education. In addition to the proposal, a team of researchers led by Dr. Morgan Gardner, (Faculty of Education, Memorial University) produced a report on youth’s vision for curriculum, titled, “In Good Hands, Youth Creating a Vision for Curriculum”.
